Tourism

Andahuaylas    (3200 masl.)   is   situated   180   km.  west  of Cuzco,  capital o f  the  department of Apurimac, zone  of the warrior culture  of   the  Chancas,  whom  left us a  legacy  of highly   interesting  constructions.
The greatest  attraction  of this  area  are  its   landscapes  and the   warmth  of  its  people.  Counts   with  diverse  zones  of tourist  attractions  surrounded by  picturesque towns,  typical of   the  area.

The Pacucha Lagoon is a place of impressive natural  beauty, it is  found 30 min.  from  the city  of  Andahuaylas, the  ruins of   Sondor (at  20 min. from the lagoon)   are  an example of  the union between the architecture and  the  nature   (unequal virtue of  the   Incas), being  this,  a  place  full  of   privileged landscapes.

Flight

To Fly Andahuaylas is a bit exigent, there are two recognized flying sites there until now, Cerro San Jose, Fully thermal site which requires experimented pilots because the complexity of the takeoff.

(if  you  don't  get a  thermal, the  landing is highly technical), but  once  skipped  this inconvenient, there are  waiting for us very  high altitude flights (more than 5000 mts.) been possible to  enjoy voluptuous  thermals  ready  to push the limits of the pilots; The cross country is a real invitation  to  do here, but is a must to study  the area maps and to fly relative close  to the villages  or  routes,  because  this  is  a very  wild,  lonely  and tough zone, the real adventurer ready to walk for a few hours at  more  than  3000  mts.  will  be able to adventure in places that has never been flown before by any other pilot.

As  a reference and  a  tell, who is writing, had the experience to  land  in  to  a  "Chacra"  (production field)  just  two hours away from  the closer route frighten terribly the country  men who  has run away like if i where the devil it self, when I took off  my  helmet they start  coming  back been  careful, I never understood what they were talking to me because  they where only  speaking in Quechua (Inca Idiom), but their  smiles  and gesticulations  expressed  more  than  a   thousand   words   in perfect  Spanish.  We  drank  a  few  Chichas  alcoholic drink based  on   fermented   corn)  they   lead   me   and  carry  my equipment trough the accidental topography.

Sondor is a poorly explored site, but one with  the biggest free flying  potentials,  casually  discovered on  the final  97's  in a tourist  visit  to  the  Sondor  ruins  by a group of pilots. The valley   here   it   has   more   than   a  thousand  meters  deep, surrounded  by  dark  rock  cliffs,   with  amazing   panoramic views  to  the four cardinal  points, there are a few rural ways trough this valley

Travel Tips

There are lodges with prices fluctuating from $3 to $40, there are  no tours, but  you can always count with "El Chino" with his little bus ready to take us even to the top of the mountains for really affordable prices.  The bus trip from Cuzco is about 8 hrs.  and  the  cost  $10, by  plane  from  lima  costs  $60. In Andahuaylas   the   traditional   tourism   has  not  arrived yet, is  a virgin site full of reality, nature and very warm people.
