Tourism


Huancayo, is located 380 Km. East from Lima City by car, to get  there  by  land  you  can also choose the train, been this a majestic travel, by the way, this is the highest  rail  way in the world, it passes trough Ticlio at  4876  mosl.  but  don't worry because on  board  you'll get a Coca Mate (infusion  based on coca  leaves,  legal  in    Peru)  and  will  help  go  trough   the Anticona  Abra.  Is well  known as the most beautiful rail way in the  world, the landscapes  are exuberant, starting  from the dessert Lima coast, immediately ascending  to the  Andes and then going down to the impotent Mantra Valley. 
The  tourist   spots   are   many,   been   the   visitant   able  to experiment a zone that even with the importance of its capital still  keeps  their traditions almost intact   no matter how close they are from Lima.
The Paca  pond,  the  snowed  mountain visits, the towns with their typical food, the landscape  observatories,  the  Mantaro River, with amazing  rafting rapids, makes Huancayo an ideal place  to  spend  a  few  resting  days,  nature  and  of   course awesome flights.

Flight


There  are    many  sites,  but  we  will  talk  about   the   most interesting  and  visited  one,  that  is located at the end of the valley (70 Km.) named, Cerro Chongos Altos, where you can go in  a normal car and the "official"  take  off  place  is  3740 mosl.  high, but for the most adventurers pilots, there is a take off  at  4370 mosl. (the antenna), but they will have to be in a real good shape to run trying to get enough sustentation.
This  valley  has  two  very high margins with a distance of 70 Km. and its an awesome place for cross country. The valley is real wide (7 Km. average) and  the only turbulence you might find are the ones created by the  thermals, having  always real big landing places available  and  routes  running all  the  way long,   a  dream place  for  hanggliders. Landing  places are in average at 3200 mosl. 
Thermals here are very powerful (easy more than 8 mps), but they  are  wide  and  is  not  a surprises zone, been always the pilot able to observe how conditions are going on.

 



 
 

Cloud  bases   normally  are  higher  than  5000  mosl.  and  is important  to fly well dressed, because temperatures can drop very fast and forces us to land because of it.
For  inexpert  pilots  with  flying  desires  would be able to fly before noon with  out any trouble, at  this  time,  thermals  are more than enough to stay high but not so strong.
In  the  afternoon  winds increases but not as much than other andean sites, is not surprising to find a bunch of little kids and women   inviting   you   to  have  some   lunch  or  to  drink  a delicious "Chicha".



 
 

Thermals are normally very well defined, they aloud us to get real  high  with  out  the  needing  to  "loock for".
Between them is almost   quiet   and  smooth,   permitting   to make   "little maneuvers" to  whom likes to  watch  the  world upside down.


Consejos

There  are  Hotels  with  prices  from US$ 3 to $ 90, tours  are very affordable. The Region  tourism direction are taking real care to promote their zone,  because of it, I do recommend to get in touch with them (in  the front of the main square)  they are very  kind people, even  to  ask  about  flying sites. In  the short  past  they  have  been  inviting  pilots  to  explore   their wonders.  A  bus ticket  costs US$  15  (OW)  and  the  travel  is around 8 hr. to  go Cerro  Chongos  Altos is very easy  and affordable because   is on an important  way and bus traffic is continue (20 min. away from Huancayo)
