Tourism

Huaráz, located at the north of the city of Lima, at a  distance of  500  Km.  by  road and  at  3,400  m.o.s.l. (meters over sea level), is home to the most ancient  Pre-Inca Culture, Chavín, breed of warriors that have left their carvings  on  rock, being these the famous stone heads.
They  have  left  buildings  that  even  today  may  inspire war tactics. Huaráz is in the Huaylas corridor, at  the  base  of  the white  chain  of  mountains  with  the  great  white  mountains watching over it.
The Huascarán, at 6,790 m.o.s.l. the highest mountain in Perú and  second  in  the  continent,  is  visited   by   thousands   of persons and continuos climbing expeditions.
The    Yanganuco   Lake   situated   between   the   peaks   of Huascarán  and  Huandoy, with its green emerald waters near the red corked trees.
Yungay,  the  vanished  city,  the  greatest  cemetery   of   the world.
Pastoruri, with its eternal snows, Chavín de Huantar, mystery of art in rock, Alpamayo, considered the most beautiful  snow peak of the world... all of these make this part of  the  country a very nice place full of attractions.
Food   is    also   very   important   in   this   region,  being  the specialties, the trout in its different forms  of  preparation and the famous "Pachamanca" (meat baked underground over hot stones).

Flight

The best known site to fly is "Cerro Pan de Azúcar, (Yungay) at 80 Km. from the city of Huaráz.
The launching site is close  to 3.100 m.o.s.l. and the landing at 2.200 m.o.s.l.  The flight is  a  thermodynamic  one  since  the thermals  in this zone are generally found broken.
But  if  you  reach  the  top  of  the  mountains (4300 m.o.s.l.) you'll find strong thermals and will let you  reach  the  city  of Huaraz (70 Km.) flying  above  5300  mts.  in  an    incredible tough back wind cross country

Cross country against the wind, Yungay  -  Caráz (12 Km.), is a real test in experience and speed, being  it  a  real  challenge for the expert pilot.
Beginner pilots can  stay near the launching zone enjoying the unbeatable thermodynamical lifting.

At about 2 P.M. the wind tends  to  increase  to  more than 40 Kph.  Then after 4 P.M. it gets better giving us the pleasure of more  restitutional  flights  and at  1.200 mts. above the valley and we are able to see the Huascarán with the orange color of sunset.
