Republic
of Peru
| In 1532, the Spanish conquistador Francisco Pizarro founded
the city of Lima. The population of the Peruvian capital has
grown to over 8 million inhabitants, and Lima exhibits all the personality
and diversity of a modern thriving
city. The downtown area has
maintained the colonial art
and architecture of a past age. The nightlife
in Barranco offers evrything from quite cafes to
nigth clubs that will keep you dancing until dawn.
Miraflores offers beautiful parks, wonderful
restaurants and breathtaking view of coast.
Lima is also the economic, geographical, and social center of Peru, home to many expositions and festivals throughout the year. |
The flying areas in
Lima could be divided in three :
Costa Verde
| The beautiful cliffs of Costa Verde provide wonderful and unique setting for flying within the city. A 70 mts drop to the beach provides for excellent lif The Takeoffs are situated in the District of Miraflores (Paraport) and in the District of San Isidro (Ghandi Park), the flight is absolutely dynamic, with laminar winds without presence of turbulence, there are landing spots all along the journey and immediately there are cabs willing to give us a 'ride up' for just a buck. |

| The trips around the buildings roofs can be very entertaining, above all in the summer when the heat increases and jacuzzis become fashionable. The maximum height is obtained in the building "El Mirador" with about 220 mts. of height even though there are times in the district of Barranco that a thermal develops and it is able to rise us between 500 - 700 meters above the city. This area is very crowded all day long on the weekends and in weekdays, during the lunch hour and after 5 p.m. The nocturnal flights are not very common but is worth the trouble to wait and see the conditions between 6:30 PM and 9:00 PM. |
Pasamayo
| Pasamayo is situated 60 Km. to the north of the city, it is a dune of sand of 400 mts. of height almost vertical to the seashore with a longitude of 4 Km. (you reach it by car until the takeoff). The flight normally is a dynamic type even though in the sunny days some small thermals do appear, this is a good area to practice maneuvers and have a great day flying over 800 mts. above the sea. |
Pachacamac
| Well located at 30 km. to
the south of Lima, area of great beauty in winter, many
pastures, flock of sheep and different kinds of birds, in
summer a dessert and barren landscape, totally
warm and dry, normally thermodynamic and
in the sunny days an interesting thermal
activity. If a marine breeze enters
and the sun is in the zenith the turbulence
do not wait to appear so it is best to fly away from the hillside.
The distance flights are not very favorable since the cloud base are usually at a maximum of 900 mts. but permanence flights take place between 10 AM to 5 - 6 PM the access is a bit remote but with 4 x 4 you can accomplish to reach the very takeoff area. The landings are broad even though a little turbulent. |
Pachacamac: the perfect
altitude flight school place
| In Lima there are hotels
with a price range from US$ 5 to US$ 250, we
recommend to the visitor
to seek for accommodations in
the district of Miraflores, since
it is walking distance from a perfect takeoff
place in the most interesting flying area there is on
the coast, the usual prices go from US$ 20
to US$ 30 even though it is possible
to obtain even more affordable lodges (also for backpackers). The
Tours are economic. The fares
on the bus and and other
public transportation are very cheap and the cabs
usually cost no more than $ 2.
The recommended places to go are: Lima - Lunahuana - Chincha - Paracas - Nazca - and Arequipa (by ground) Arequipa - Cuzco (airplane), Cuzco - Andahuaylas (ground), Andahuaylas - Lima (airplane) and Lima - Huaraz - Lima by ground. The airplane tickets (OW) are between US$ 40 - 65 and the bus fares go between US$ 10 - 20. |
